During recent years, displays have been increasingly integrating technologies such as IoT (Internet-of-Things), 5G, cloud, Big Data and artificial intelligence. A plethora of display innovations and applications have emerged. Meanwhile, since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, our lifestyles have changed. The demand from the stay-at-home economy, long-distance learning and working from home continues to reshape what life is about.

According to the international market research organization Newzoo, the stay-at-home economy that emerged during the pandemic has created a home entertainment boom. The global esports market in 2020 exceeded $1bn, with nearly 500 million viewers. This far exceeds the viewing population of nearly 20 million for the championship games of traditional sports and the major leagues such as NFL (National Football League), NBA (National Basketball Association) or MLB (Major League Baseball). Also, to reduce virus transmission during the pandemic, over 150 countries suspended schools during 2020. Over 90% of students were affected.

COVID-19 has disrupted the lifestyles of the public but also created new demands. Driven by the demand of home working and remote teaching in the second half of 2020, the interactive whiteboard (IWB) market grew nearly 10% in 2020 and is expected to grow further in 2021. IWB is primarily for the education market. More than 50% of the demand is from education, the remainder being for commercial applications, mainly conferences. IWB was introduced into the education market in 2010 and has achieved high penetration. Smart education is the main driver for shipment growth going forward.

The Intel Distribution of OpenVINO toolkit has been installed in some ViewSonic IWBs. Artificial intelligence detects and analyzes facial expression changes to provide real-time feedback from students in the classroom, so that the speaker can make necessary adjustments to their teaching and interaction methods.

Surging demand for interactive whiteboards (IWBs)

To achieve efficient remote collaboration, the demand has been rising for video conference facilities with built-in cameras, encoders/decoders, microphones, speakers and IWBs supporting network functions. At this juncture, there is no clear sign of an end to the pandemic. The adoption of IWBs by businesses has reduced unnecessary travel and boosted meeting efficiency. The demand for remote working and video conferencing will continue to grow. This has become the segment that industry players are focusing on after the education market.

As far as the tablet market is concerned, the IEK Consulting report estimates that the global shipment was about 50 million units during the fourth quarter of 2020. The fourth quarter is the traditional high season, and COVID-19 pushed the global demand up even further. The demand from education applications continued to increase the shipment of the entry-level 10.2” iPad and contributed to the global shipments in the fourth quarter of 2020 reaching a record high level during recent years. This is probably due to more hours being spent at home. As the supply of notebooks was constrained by component shortages, some consumers used high-specification tablets as their main device while working from home. Furthermore, the better entertainment experience rendered by large-sized tablets has given another boost to shipments. The shipment of brand tablets above 11” exceeded 10% of the tablet PC market, indicating the growing demand for large-sized tablets.

Drive for Digital Teaching Evolution on a Global Scale

COVID-19 forced schools around the world to close campuses and initiate a global revolution for remote and digital teaching. The pandemic urged the teachers and students in many countries around the world to take the first step on the path of digital learning. The growing availability of hardware and equipment and the increasing prevalence of user experience are accelerating the innovation and transformation of curricula and the development of digital learning content. According to forecasts by Global Information, the worldwide digital education market is expected to exceed US$10 billion in 2021 and triple to US$30 billion by 2025.

In this context, Taiwan should refer to the relevant policies of neighboring countries in order to speed up the transformation and development of related industries. For instance, Japan said in its Declaration to be the World’s Most Advanced IT Nation that information technology is essential to the digital transformation of the education environment. The adoption of e-learning for basic knowledge training and the combination of hybrid learning and in-person teaching allow students to become familiar with online teaching. The College of Smart Automotive Engineering in Sun Moon University in Korea administers online tests with AIoT technology. After the students have completed their tests, professors can review and assess the curriculum in the databank for students and adjust learning content according to AI analysis in order to enhance the learning capability of students.

The light at the end of the tunnel is yet to be seen since the global outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. The demand from the stay-at-home economy, distance learning and home working remains strong, and the supply of end products cannot keep up. Related industries have been benefiting, and the display industry is no exception. The demand for large-sized display panels used in IT products has been driven by the tenders in the education market since 2020. The shipment of IWB (interactive whiteboard) panels has been increasing significantly due to the growing popularity of online conferences and classes. Taiwanese manufacturers focusing on the IT and TV segments continue to develop the market in these verticals. However, it will be necessary for them to carefully evaluate their product mix to meet the global demand, given the continued shortage of materials in the supply chain and the changing dynamics of the end market. Meanwhile, the world is gradually getting used to the new work mode and new teaching methods. It is worth contemplating how to enhance the efficiency of digital transformation while the battle against COVID-19 continues. This will benefit the development of related industries.
