        簡報大綱

Stephen Su, General Director of IEK, was invited to share “Taiwan Memory Industry: Past, Present, and Future” at the SEMICON Taiwan 2014 Memory Executive Summit. In this presentation, Stephen talked about current the global trends in memory industry and the status in Taiwan. Then he described the status of ITRI’s research progress in RRAM. During his presentation, he emphasized a few key messages:

        • The world is undergoing an industry revolution from Energy Economy to Data Economy. The similarity between the two economies is that the value-add comes from exploration, drilling, processing, applications as in Energy Economy. However, the main difference is that while natural resource is limited in Energy Economy, the need for data in Data Economy will continue to explode. Hence the need for data storage will continue to surge.
        • Return on Investment (ROI) will need to be considered for future Taiwan industry investment. Currently the memory industry remains to be a high value-add of Taiwan’s industrial portfolio, similar to the rest of the semiconductor industry in Taiwan.
        • For the emerging memory technology, RRAM represents an opportunity to replace NAND Flash: First start with embedded memory for IoT wearables, then with embedded memory for smart phones, and potentially as stand-alone memory for data center. International consortium can co-develop emerging memory with shared resources and risks. There are some MRAM alliances but not yet in RRAM.
        • Taiwan with its ready ecosystem can be a hub to drive RRAM commercialization and applications. System design clients such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, or Toshiba can be potential champion for international consortium. These system design companies are likely to control or influence future memory architecture.

        Outline:

        • Taiwan memory Industry status
        • Why emerging memory
        • Proposed emerging memory consortium in Taiwan
        • Conclusion

We are very pleased to present his presentation in PDF format for your reference.
