Mr. Stephen Su, General Director of IEK, delivered a presentation on “3D Printing Overview: Global Trends and Implications for Taiwan.” Since US President Obama announced 3D printing as the first wave of US Advanced Manufacturing strategy in 2012, the notion of 3D printing causing the next wave of industrial revolution has been getting more followers to jump on the bandwagon. Many companies around the world have begun to either develop 3D printing technology or even start businesses using existing technology. What will be the important global trends and drivers in 3D printing for people to watch in the next few years? What are the key implications of 3D printing on Taiwan’s manufacturing and technology development strategy? These important questions are addressed in this presentation.
At the end, he emphasized a few key messages:
- 3D Printing (or Advanced Manufacturing) global markets continue to rise at >20% CAGR at least till 2021.
- More important for 3D Printing in the future will depend on service-based applications ecosystems.
- Potential 3D Printing applications for Taiwan will most likely to start with medical, molding and arts applications.
- Besides 3D Printing: Roll-to-Roll (R2R) manufacturing process could give Taiwan better leverage for next wave of advanced manufacturing.
- Taiwan need to collaborate with international partners in piloting advanced manufacturing ecosystems.
