The International Workshop on Perspective of Information Technology, organized by Institute of Information Systems and Application, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), took place on May 28, 2012. Stephen Su, General Director of IEK, was invited to deliver a speech on “Enabling Information Technology for Service-based Application Ecosystems” at the forum. Other presenters and participants included Prof. Cyrus Shahabi from University of Southern California, Mr. David Wortley from The Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), and host Prof. Von-Wen Soo, Chairman of Institute of Information Systems and Applications at NTHU.

In his speech, Stephen first talked about the top 2012 ICT industry trends forecasted by IEK researchers. Then he highlighted the important trends of 3C product companies moving from providing “Services” to generating “User Experience.” The emphasis on generating “User Experience” has transformed the ICT industry structure from the traditional industry value chain to a new way of industry development models in the form of “Service-based Applications Ecosystems” which combine the additional players of system platform, value-add applications, business operations, and cultural innovations in a value-web structure. Several examples of how companies pioneering such concept in various industries are analyzed for illustration of this new type of ecosystem structures. Some of the ongoing research projects in IEK and the rest of ITRI to better understand consumer behavior under various “Service-based Applications Ecosystems” are described in this presentation, including piloting the business models and technology applications for “Online Tourism” whereby people get tour remote locations via live video streaming. Key benefits in addition to traditional tourism with augmented reality include: Online shopping, interactive tour routes, pre-trip planning, social networking, etc.

At the end of the presentation, he emphasized that although Taiwan is facing several challenges in transforming its ICT industries, how to pilot the Service-based Applications Ecosystems and leveraging the respective system and service technologies for exporting to overseas market would be key to Taiwan’s future success. But it is also important to give time expectation to technology commercialization as illustrated from Stanford University’s past technology licensing trackrecord.

We are very pleased to present his presentation in PDF format for your reference.
